Honey chicken. Impress your friends and family with these flavor-packed crispy bites of sticky chicken. This lip-smacking combo of sweet honey and battered chicken is definitely a winner. Make this takeaway favorite at home with a simple and easy recipe!

Besides Indian, one of my favorite takeaways is Chinese food. I love the complex flavors that make this cuisine so unique and totally amazing. Who would have thought that the delectable combo of sweet honey and savory chicken would create such an incredibly delicious dish?

Whenever I eat Chinese, this honey chicken is a must for me. And the best part? You can easily create your own homemade version of this Chinese takeout favorite. It’s a no- brainer. If you love fried chicken, this is obviously a great way to jazz up the flavors and enjoy an amazing appetizer for your next gathering.

Making this honey chicken is actually a two-step process. First, you’ll need to deep fry battered chicken and second, coat them in a sweet honey sauce.

The perfect batter creates a super crunchy outer covering that makes this chicken so good. The basic batter is a simple combo of all- purpose (plain) flour, corn flour and a little baking soda. Again, the fizzy soda is key in this recipe.

Chilled soda makes the coating super crispy. If you don’t want to use soda, chilled water is also a great option. However, chilled soda always guarantee crunchy coating. The chicken pieces are coated well in the batter and deep fried to perfection.

The second part of making this honey chicken involves the honey sauce. A simple combo of honey and soy sauce adding that sweet touch to this much loved chicken dish. For an aesthetic appeal, you’ll also need to sprinkle these chicken pieces with some sesame seeds. Perfect! And totally lip-smacking!

Ingredients

Fried chicken:

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour plain flour
  • ¼ cup cornflour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • ¾ cup chilled soda water or ice cold water
  • 1 kg chicken breast cut into cubes

Honey sauce:

  • 1 teaspoon cornflour
  • 2 teaspoon water
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic garlic paste
  • 4 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar
  • ½ cup water
  • Salt to taste

Honey chicken:

  • Sesame seeds to sprinkle on top
  • Chopped spring onions to garnish

Instructions

Fried chicken:

  • Place all-purpose (palin) flour, cornflour, and baking powder in a bowl. Season with salt. Stir to combine. Add soda water little by little to make lump-free smooth batter. Leave to rest for 15 minutes. Add chicken cubes. Toss to coat.
  • Meanwhile heat oil for deep frying over medium-high heat. Add chicken in batches, and deep fry until golden brown. Drain on an absorbent towel. Set aside.

Honey sauce:

  • Combine cornflour and water to make smooth paste. Set aside.
  • Reserve 1 tablespoon frying oil. Heat this oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add garlic. Saute, stirring constantly, for a minute or until fragrant. Add honey, rice wine vinegar and water. Season with salt. Add cornflour mixture. Simmer, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes or until the honey sauce thickens.

Honey chicken:

  • Toss fried chicken in the honey sauce. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Garnish with spring onions.
